Patheos.com Religion Portals are a good source of background information on a number of different religions.  The contributors to the site are academic and religious leaders.

ReligiousTolerange.org is sponsored by the Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance, and has been on the web since 1995.  It contains thousands of essays on many different types of religion topics.  The essays are not peer reviewed, however, so read them with a critical eye.
