Information Literacy: Library IL Services in Detail

The purpose of this guide is to provide information on information literacy programming at Copley Library. For more information, see the instruction page of our website: https://www.sandiego.edu/library/services/library-instruction.php

Copley Librarians Can:

  • Provide a course-integrated instruction session for your class

    • These are available on request from any of the subject librarians. We are able to work with you to develop a presentation targeted to the needs of students in a particular course or discipline. These can be held in a Copley Library classroom, or we can come to your classroom if that is appropriate. We can work with you to develop assignments that maximize the library skills of your students.

  • Develop on-line research guides for your course(s)

    • Librarians can create a course-specific research guide for your class using our LibGuides system.

  • Meet with individual students for a research consultation

    • Students can make an appointment with a librarian for assistance with their research for a paper, project, or other assignments.

  • Consult with you on how to add IL-related assignments to your syllabus

    • We can meet with you to discuss your course goals and suggest possible ways to include IL in your syllabus.

  • Teach Workshops on IL topics

    • We offer several workshops each semester on topics such as evaluating information, using subject databases, constructing a literature review, citing sources (APA, MLA, etc.), and more.

  • Be embedded in your course

    • This could include providing multiple instruction sessions, arranging for one-one consultations, and other ways of integrating with your class.

  • Create online tutorials
    • Librarians can use LibWizard - a tool to design digital learning objects such as tutorials, quizzes, and more - to create tutorials for your class based on a specific task or need. See this Preventing Plagiarism tutorial as an example.

You can reach out to your subject specialist by email or use our instruction request form

Ideas for IL-related Assignments

For ideas on how to incorporate information literacy instruction and assignments into your courses, take a look at CORA, the Community of Online Research Assignments. Funded by the Statewide Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC), CORA is an open educational resource (OER) for adapting and sharing research assignments and is searchable by keyword.

Reach out to your subject librarian to help adapt an assignment or lead a session around an assignment you feel would be useful to your students.
