"Celebrate Copley!": Grand Opening Video Contest

Overview

Call for Participation:

Copley Library underwent a major renovation in 2019, but the pandemic prevented us from hosting an opening ceremony as originally planned in 2020. Now, over two years later, we need your help memorializing this momentous achievement. 

We invite current USD students to submit a short video celebrating Copley Library’s renovated spaces for a chance to win $750! The winning video will also be stored in perpetuity in DigitalUSD, the University of San Diego’s digital archive, as the official grand opening event for the 2020 renovation.

Eligibility, Submission Requirements, and Rules

Eligibility:

  • The contest is open to all current USD undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Both individual and group submissions are allowed.
  • Each person named on the entry form must be currently enrolled at USD. 
  • Entries must be submitted using this Google Form no later than 11:59pm on Monday, November 21st, 2022
     

Submission Requirements:

  • Entries must be 60 seconds or less in duration.
  • Entries must feature at least three of Copley Library’s spaces.
  • Entries may depict common space uses (i.e. independent study, group study, reference assistance) or use Library spaces as a setting for other creative activities (i.e. TikTok dance).
  • Participants must be respectful of the Library spaces and patrons during filming.
  • Videos may be created using any video editing software or app (iMovie, Adobe Final Cut Pro, TikTok, Instagram Reels, and others).
  • The winning video must be converted to an MP4 file in order to be included in the DigitalUSD collection.
  • Submissions are encouraged to use original audio and video. Submissions that include more than 10 percent of a copyrighted work without permission from the rights holder will not be accepted. Videos that use copyrighted materials are encouraged to consider transforming the materials borrowed to ensure fair use in accordance with U.S. Copyright Law.
     

Contest Rules & Selection Criteria:

  • The winning video will be stored in perpetuity in DigitalUSD, the University of San Diego’s digital archive, as the official grand opening event for the 2020 renovation. 
  • The winning video submission will win $750. 
  • Prize money for the winning entry will be divided equally among each person included on the entry form.
  • Entries will be judged by a panel of Faculty Librarians on concept, relevance, content, creativity, editing, and overall quality.
  • Video submissions that contain profanity or content which denigrates any particular individual or group of people will be automatically disqualified.
  • The winning video will be announced during a Celebrate Copley! Video Contest reception on Thursday, December 1st, 2022.

Background:

Copley Library underwent a major renovation in 2019 and was slated to reopen fully in May 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed and altered the reopening in numerous and significant ways. For much of 2020 building hours were shortened; access to the print collection was limited to curbside pickup; furniture was removed to accommodate  distancing requirements; and the 25 newly built group study rooms were transformed into quiet individual study spaces. Pandemic restrictions eased somewhat throughout 2021 and early 2022, but hybrid learning environments and campus-wide mask mandates further impacted how Copley’s physical spaces were used and enjoyed by patrons. The Fall 2022 semester has finally allowed us to utilize the renovated space as originally intended and we are ready to celebrate with you! We’re asking for your help to create short videos that highlight our many spaces and services to the wider USD community.
