Data Analysis Software

Resources to help you use qualitative & mixed methods data analysis software like NVivo & Dedoose

Access to Dedoose

Dedoose account activation:

You must first complete this short onboarding survey to properly activate your account. Doing so will register you with the SOLES Dedoose account and gain you access to training and support resources.

The University of San Diego ended institutional support of NVivo for tenure-track faculty & graduate students on June 30, 2024.

SOLES acquired a site license for Dedoose in Summer 2024. It is available to any current faculty, staff, or students.

Follow-up questions from Dedoose 10 intro webinar (answered by Sara Grummert):
  1. Can the auto-code wizard search for phrases as well as single words?

Yes! But keep in mind spelling matters, so if there is a typo in the transcript Dedoose will not flag it in the excerpt search.

  2. Can the auto-code wizard and text analytics features be used for languages other than English?

At this time, both the Auto-Code Wizard and Text Analytics features are optimized for all left-to-right languages with paragraphs and standard punctuation. Language specific stop word lists are slated for 10.1 and future releases as well.

  3. Is there an Access Group that can block another user from using the Auto-Code Wizard?

In the initial release on March 13th there will not be a dedicated access group to preventing others from using the Auto-Code Wizard. However, it will be included in version 10.1 that will follow.

  4. Sara and Hannah seemed like a good time  - where can I go to receive more of their applied methods training and content?

Funny you ask! We can be found over at the Institute for Mixed Methods Research where we host workshops and courses specifically on Dedoose, as well as research camps to progress your analysis and writing. We will also host a free Getting Started webinar in late March (listed in the webinar portal). If your organization has a Dedoose Premier or Enterprise plan, you receive training and project-based consultation for no additional cost.

  5. Will updating to the new version disrupt my current projects and work?

No, updating to Dedoose 10 will not impact your project data or disrupt your process. You can ignore the more advanced features if you choose. The only key changes to be aware of are the user interface enhancements (e.g., vertical navigation, codes workspace) so you are aware of how to change to your desired UI theme. The mechanics of coding, excerpting, memoing, and visualizing your data that you are used to remain the same.

Updating the app also has no impact on any shared data where some folks may not have updated yet. You can still collaborate with others who have the older version of Dedoose. However, this is not recommended for long periods of time because there could be issues that have not been identified. In short, folks should update as soon as they can for performance enhancements, but there should not be concerns about backwards compatibility.
