Datastream Data Downloading Instructions

The following are instructions for downloading timeseries data from the Datastream service using the DS Windows software.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask a Reference Librarian

1.             Launch DataStream DS Windows

2.             Select Type of Request: Online Code Lookup

3.             Select Type of Data: [select data type] (example: Economics)

4.             Programs Available: Looking up [data type] codes. (example: Economics)

5.             Click or press [enter]

This will take you to a wide variety of data set codes.  Type the number of the data set group and press or click [enter].  You may have to go through multiple screens to find the code for the data set you would like to retrieve.  The codes for each data set have features similar to the title of the data set (for example, USGDP…B is the code for U.S. Gross Domestic Product).  Once found, write down the code(s) or highlight and copy them in preparation for retrieval and downloading.  After you have your code(s), click the [clear] button in the upper left corner.

Before retrieving the data, you must set the program to capture the data.  This is done as follows:

1.             Insert portable data storage device into the USB port on the computer

2.             Click the capture icon.             It is the far right button at the top of the screen.  It will turn blue.

3.             Click [OK] box for CSV file

4.             Change drive to your portable data storage device

5.             Assign filename (example: usgdp.csv)

6.             Click [OK]

7.             Press or click [enter]

You are now ready to run your search:

1.             In the Program Number box at the top of the screen, type 900B.  Press or click [enter]

2.             Enter or paste code: (example: USGDP…B) Press or click [enter]

3.             Enter the start date: MM-DD-YYYY Press or click [enter]

4.             Enter the end date: MM-DD-YYYY Press or click [enter]  If you do not enter an end date, the             most recent date that data is available will be retrieved

5.             Enter frequency: D (Daily); W (Weekly); M (Monthly); Q: Quarterly; Y (Yearly)   [enter]

The data will now appear in comma delimited format.  A flashing cursor in the lower right corner means that there is another page (or more) of data.  Press or click [enter] to continue downloading.  When the data is completely downloaded, you will return to the main Datastream screen.  To complete the download, you must complete the capture of the file.  To do this

1.             Click the capture icon          to save the data to your portable data storage device.  The capture icon                 will turn from blue to gray.

To view the file(s), your portable data storage device must be taken to a computer with Microsoft Excel.  The Datastream file(s) you capture will convert to Excel format when opened.

These instructions are only for retrieving and opening time series data sets from Datastream using the DS Windows software.  Datastream has many other capabilities.  For assistance, please contact the Business Librarian, Steve Staninger at x6812 or sstan@sandiego.edu
